Weather in Istanbul

The climate in Istanbul varies greatly from one season to the next, and even from one point in the city to another.

With the city being 95 kilometres long, it's common that the European part is sunny and the Asian half rainy and vice versa.

In general, the temperature is similar to that of Madrid, but it rains more often, and depending on the season it can change greatly.

Summer in Istanbul

Summer in Istanbul is hot, and with very little rain. Maximum daily temperatures are often over 30ºC (especially in August) and it rarely drops below 20ºC.

Winter in Istanbul

The months between December and February are the coldest and rainiest months. The temperature often drops below zero, and snow is common.

Best time to travel to Istanbul

Our favourite months to visit Istanbul are May, June, September and October. These months are when the temperature is the perfect mid-point and rain is infrequent.

If you can't go during these months, our best advice is to avoid the cold winter!
